Alternate reception sites

Why isn't the MARAC reception here?

A traveling sideshow complete with "a startling collection of oddities featuring Edgar the Alligator Man"!?! How cool!

I wanna rock right now!

Tone Loc and Rob Base will be in Baltimore on Thursday. Awww yeah.

It Takes Two is soooo stuck in my head. I feel like I should get out on my high school dance floor (aka the cafeteria), but work will not allow. Sigh.

Snakes could be on my plane

How could someone not be anticipating the August release of the instant classic Snakes on a Plane starring one of my favorite, favorite actors Samuel L. Jackson?

The thing is, I have not flown in an airplane since seeing the trailer for the film and frankly, I'm scared as hell that there will be snakes on my motherfuckin' plane to Baltimore! But I will go to Baltimore. A newly developed irrational fear of snakes on planes will not keep me from the education, joy, and vendor goodies that will be MARACimore.

Bowling with colleagues

Could someone explain to me what duckpin bowling is? It is listed as one of the extra curricular activities in the conference program, but I'm just not getting it.

I really hope duckpin bowling allows me to wear the same sort of sassy shoes. I love, love, love, love dancing in bowling shoes. I should really talk about archives somewhere around here...

Caucus Representative Pageant

The potentially funniest thing about the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference semi-annual meeting in Baltimore is that the Miss USA pageant will be in B-more the same weekend. While I don't think you will hear a lot of folks saying,"Whew, am I relieved! I thought I was going to have to miss one or the other!" I think MARAC-ers could have more fun with this than they seem to have to date.

It is time to discuss the Ms./Mr. MARAC State Caucus Representative Pageant. The obvious choices for folks to represent each state in the MARAC region-West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and the District of Columbia-will be our duly and newly elected caucus reps. I hope everyone voted with that in mind in the recent elections (which you just missed the deadline on, sorry).

First point up for discussion: the competition. What are the archival equivalents of the talent, swimsuit, evening gown, question and answer, and "don't trip !" portions of the evening?

Things to do in Baltimore

I was disappointed when I read about this museum that it wasn't actually devoted to dimes. Still, sounds like a good time.

Lodging Requirements

I think I am at a point in life where I can make demands on friends, hotels, and venues. I can't wait until I can make demands on conferences.

Meals and whatnot

If you cannot get someone else to pay for your food and/or drinks while at a conference, then you just aren't working hard enough. Vendors can be an easy target, but don't forget that they are people too. Long forgotten classmates are also often a nice source of sustenance. And don't neglect to consider random business travelers not associated with your conference/meeting who have an expense account the bounty of which they are eager to share.

Accepting drinks and food from people who want a position at your institution seems a bit cruel.
